Plot

Plot

In October 1985, New York City police are investigating the murder of Edward Blake. With the police having no leads, costumed vigilante Rorschach decides to probe further. Discovering Blake to be the face behind The Comedian, a costumed hero employed by the United States government, Rorschach believes he has discovered a plot to eliminate costumed adventurers and sets about warning four of his retired comrades, Dan Dreiberg (formerly the second Nite Owl), the superpowered and emotionally detached Doctor Manhattan and his lover Laurie Juspeczyk (the second Silk Spectre), and Adrian Veidt (once the hero Ozymandias, and now a successful businessman).

After Blake’s funeral, Doctor Manhattan is accused on national television of being the cause of cancer in friends and former colleagues. When the U.S. government takes the accusations seriously, Manhattan exiles himself to Mars. In doing so he throws humanity into political turmoil, with the Soviet Union invading Afghanistan to capitalize on the perceived American weakness. Rorschach’s paranoid beliefs appear vindicated when Adrian Veidt narrowly survives an assassination attempt, and Rorschach himself is framed for murder and arrested.

Jaded in her relationship, and no longer kept on retainer by the government, Juspeczyk stays with Dreiberg; they don their costumes as they grow closer together. With Dreiberg starting to believe some aspects of Rorschach’s conspiracy theory, the pair take it upon themselves to free him from prison. Doctor Manhattan, after analyzing his own personal history, places the fate of his involvement with human affairs in Juspeczyk’s hands. He teleports her to Mars to make the case for emotional investment. During the course of the argument, Juspeczyk is forced to come to terms with the fact that Blake was her biological father, the discovery of which re-engages Doctor Manhattan’s interest in humanity.

On Earth, Nite Owl and Rorschach continue to uncover the conspiracy surrounding the death of The Comedian and the accusations that drove Doctor Manhattan into exile. They discover evidence that Adrian Veidt may be behind the plan. The pair then confront Veidt at his Antarctic retreat. Veidt explains his underlying plan is to save humanity from impending nuclear war between the United States and Soviet Union by faking an alien invasion in New York City, which he hopes will unite the nations against a perceived common enemy. He also reveals that he had killed The Comedian, arranged for Dr. Manhattan’s past associates to contract cancer, and staged the attempt on his own life in order to place himself above suspicion. Finding his logic callous and abhorrent, Dreiberg and Rorschach attempt to stop him but discover that Veidt has already enacted his plan.

When Doctor Manhattan and Juspeczyk arrive back to Earth, they are confronted by mass destruction and wide scale death in New York City. Doctor Manhattan notices his abilities are limited by tachyons emanating from the Antarctic, and the pair teleport there. They discover Veidt’s involvement and confront him. Veidt shows everyone news broadcasts confirming the cessation of global hostilities, leading almost all present to agree that concealing the truth from the public is in the best interests of the world. Rorschach refuses to compromise and leaves, intent on revealing the truth. As he is making his way back, he is confronted by Manhattan. Rorschach tells Manhattan he’ll have to kill him to stop him from exposing Veidt and his actions, and Manhattan responds by vaporizing him. Manhattan then wanders through the base and finds Veidt, who asks Manhattan if he did the right thing in the end. In response Manhattan’s states that “Nothing ever ends” before leaving the Earth for a different galaxy. Dreiberg and Juspeczyk go into hiding under new identities and continue their romance.

Main Characters

watchmen-poster-rorschach

Rorschach/ Walter Kovacs

Rorschach/ Walter Kovacs

Of all the characters in Watchmen, I’d say that Walter Kovacs is one of the most complex. His life has been shrouded in pain and anger and since the day he was born, March 21, 1940. Kovacs mother was a prostitute who beat and abused him relentlessly. One Day when he was 10 he got into a fight with two bullies and ended up blinding one of them with the bully’s own lit cigarette! He then became a ward of the state and went to a school for troubled children. He was brilliant in high school, scoring good marks in many subjects including boxing and gymnastics. When Walter was 16 he found out his mother had been been viciously murdered by her pimp. He only said one word when he heard the news…”Good”.

around that time he worked as an unskilled garment worker. He became fascinated with fabric made by Doctor Manhattan. One in particular was a mix between two liquids in between two layers of latex. The two liquids were black and white and never mixed, looking a lot like a Rorschach ink blot test. Kovacs had a chance to learn about the fabric when a young woman decided not to buy a dress made of the material. he learned to cut it using heated scissors. Later a woman names Kitty Ganovese was murdered. She was the woman who had wanted that dress, and that’s when Kovacs decided to avenge the weak and powerless. He cut the dress and made it into a mask.

Years later Walter was on a case looking for a little girl who had been kidnapped. Finally he found the captors hideout and after searching the house for evidence he discovered that the little girl had been cut into pieces and fed to two German Shepherds. This is the point when Walter Kovacs snapped and permanently became Rorschach, referring to his mask as his true “face”. Rorschach killed the two dogs and silently waited for the kidnapper to return. When the man returned Rorschach beat the man and then chained him to a pipe. He set a hacksaw near him and began to light the house on fire. The man yelled his innocence but Rorschach only said that he wouldnt have enough time to cut thorugh the chianes thus incinuating that the man would have to cut through his hand if he wanted to be free. Rorschach sat outside and watched as the building burned down, with no sign of the kidnapper. In 1977 the Keene Act took effect. It was a law that outlawed all costumed vigilantes. This made Rorschach even more angry and violent, to the point where he murdered a notorious rapist and left his corpse in front of a police station. He is still the only vigilante still fighting crime. He lives in a beat up old apartment and walks the streets aimlessly in the day like a vagabond.

In the mid 1980’s Rorschach was working on another murder case. This one involved th a man named Edward Blake, who he soon discovered was the Comedian ( a government sponsored hero/ adventurer. He saw the murder as the beginning of a plan to murder all previous costumed heroes. So he began interviewing and warning former members of the hero community. None of them took him seriously but then he saw how Doctor Manhattan exiled himself and the attempted murder of Adrian Veidt (Ozymandias), and this made him believe he was on the right track. But as his investigation continued he was framed for murdering his old arch nemesis “Moloch” (who was dying of cancer and a threat to no one). The police showed up and Rorschach was forced to fight his way out by using normal household objects, and he almost got away before being knocked unconscious. Rorschach was sent to prison where he saw a psychologist regularly. He was constantly threatened by other inmates, and when his life was threatened in the rison cafeteria he fought back by throwing boiling cooking grease on his assailant. An old enemy of his staged a riot in attempt to kill Rorschach, but it backfired as Rorschach not only escaped but he drowned his old enemy in a toilet. At this same time Nite Owl II and Silk Spectre II were attempting to break him out so he could aid them in finding the man responsible for getting rid of costumed heroes, by using the riot as a cover.

After The investigation went on Nite Owl II and Rorschach discovered that the mastermind behind this plan was Adrian Veidt (Ozymandias). The duo got set and traveled to Ozymandias’ home in Antarctica to stop him. But they were to late in executing his plan. He had created an artificial “alien” and released it upon New York City. It killed millions of people and traumatized even more. Ozymandias’ plan was to use the fake alien to force the nations at war to stop fighting and join forces against the alien threat, instead of fighting each other causing a nuclear holocaust. His plan worked.

When Nite Owl and Rorschach finally make it to Ozymandias’ home. Ozymandias confesses his plan and then doctor Manhattan adn Silk Spectre appear. There is a struggle between the heroes but eventually Ozymandias is taken down. The remaining heroes agree that they cannot tell Ozymandias’ secret, in fear that a nuclear war will happen. but Rorschach refuses to keep it a secret. Doctor Manhattan tells him that they can’t allow him to reveal the truth. But Roraschach continues to refuse and pulls his mask off, demanding to be killed if they want to keep it a secret. Manhattan for the first time reluctantly complies and vaporizes Rorschach. But Rorschach’s wasnt finished even after death. Before leaving to for, he wrote a long journal detailing his investigation and sent it to a reactionary right-wing newspaper The New Frontiersman.

Rorschach is a resourceful, ruthless investigator and fighter. He is exceptionally skilled at using otherwise harmless objects as improvised weapons, at various times using hair spray, cooking fat, and a toilet bowl to lethal effect. He possesses great physical strength (in addition to experienced fighting skills). He also has a creative flair for the dramatic to enhance his interrogations.

Rorschach is played by Jackie Earle Haley.

Nite Owl II/ Dan Dreiberg

Nite Owl II/ Dan Dreiberg

Dan Dreiberg is the character everyone can see being most like Batman. Mostly due to his appearance and use of gadgets, but trust me Dan is much more complex than he seems! He had always depended on his technical know-how rather than brute force, unlike his fellow costumed heroes. But that certainly does not mean Dan can’t handle himself in a predicament, because he is more than capable. He has a genius-level intellect, with an IQ of 192. Dreiberg is an Olympic-level acrobat, and a very skilled hand-to-hand combatant. He has studied in the martial arts of Karate and Aikido. He created an arsenal of gadgets, including suction pads, sight-enhancing lenses and a protective costume. His persona has an owl theme to it and he flys an Owl-ship he calls Archimedes or Archie for short.

Dans Father was a banker and ended up leaving him a pretty big inheritance, which was all put into building his crime-fighting equipment. The original Nite Owl, Hollis Mason was Dans biggest hero. When Hollis retired Dan sent him a letter begging Hollis to let him carry on the Nite Owl legacy. Hollis took one look at Dans arsenal of gear and equipment and could not refuse. After that the two men became good friends and hung out every Saturday.

Dan crusaded as Nite Owl II for several years joining Rorschach to take on legions of criminals. Once the Keene Act was passes in 1977 Dan knew that it was time to hang up the cowl due to the expense of his activities. This was a decision that Dan will always regret. Dan graduated from Harvard University with a masters in Aeronautics and Zoology.

When Laurie Juspeczyk leaves her boyfriend Doctor Manhattan, Dan seeks to comfort her but a romantic relationship seems to have started between them. The two decide to dress in their old costumes and go for a night ride in Archie. They end up saving people from a burning building, which sparks they’re need to discover who killed the comedian. So they decide to break Rorschach out of prison. But after they break out they find out that Hollis mason was viciously murdered by a mob.

Dan thought that Ozymandias was to blame for all the deaths, him and Rorschach set out for Ozymandias home in Antarctica. When they finally reach Ozymandias’ lair they confront him but are easily defeated. Like most villains, Ozymandias reveals his diabolical plot to the two heroes. He then tells the two that his plan had already been put into effect hours before they had come. Millions of people were killed due to the artificial alien Ozymandias had made. So his plan was already complete, the nations had stopped their wars and were now trying to stop the “alien threat”. Dan reluctantly decides to keep this whole thing a secret. Rorschach decides he cant keep a secret and Manhattan ends up killing him unbeknownsed to the others. Ozymandias offers Dan and Laurie hospitality and they decide to take it.

Dan Dreiberg is played by Patrick Wilson.

The Silk Spectre II/ Laurie Juspeczyk

The Silk Spectre II/ Laurie Juspeczyk

The Silk Spectre II/ Laurie Juspeczyk

Laurie Juspeczyk is the daughter of Sally Jupiter AKA The original Silk Spectre. She has never had any interest in being a heroine like her mother but went along with it anyway. She had brown hair unlike both her parents, so she figured that Laurence Schexnayder was not her real father. She had a feeling that another hero (Hooded Justice) was her real father, but was incorrect. Laurie has always had a strained relationship with her mother and It is shown throughout the story. Mostly because Sally wanted to shield Laurie from many of the harsh realities that came along with crime fighting. One was not letting her read Hollis Masons (Nite Owl I) autobiography, Under the Hood. Which included how The Comedian had sexually assaulted Sally, which Laurie knew nothing of. Sally seemed to treat Laurie like a child by picking out her revealing costume, and bringing her to the “Crimbusters” meeting in a limo. the meeting ended in disaster and the Crimebusters ended up breaking up before it even started. On her way out Laurie met the Comedian who complimented her on being a spitting image of her mother. Their conversation ended as Sally came and forced Laurie to leave angrily, for some reason Laurie thought she saw the Comedian looking sad. During the ride home, Sally told Laurie her history with the Comedian( but excluded the fact that he was her father). Laurie became upset with the Comedian and began to hate him for the pain he caused her mother. But as time passed Sally seemed to come to terms with the Comedians actions and even began to defend him after he was murdered. Shortly after the Crimbusters meeting Laurie met Doctor Manhattan and pursued a relationship with him. Laurie and Manhattan soon worked together on numerous government assignments, like the riots during the police strike of 1977. Laurie still never truly enjoyed being a hero or working for the government, who constantly took advantage of her relationship with Doctor Manhattan. Laurie was thrilled to find out about the Keene act of 1977 (forced all costumed vigilantes into retirement).

Once retired, Laurie moved in with Manhattan for years, but their relationship began to have problems, mostly due to Manhattans consistent disconnection with humanity. Eventually Laurie left Manhattan and began living with Dan Dreiberg (Nite Owl II) whom she soon became romantically involved with. A nuclear war was approaching so the two decided to go out in their costumes for a joy ride in Dreibergs airship “Archie”. during the flight they saw a burning building, they felt obligated to help the people inside the building, so they did! Soon after, doctor Manhattan brought her to planet Mars, where she was trying to convince him to save humanity from the nuclear war, at the same time she realized that the Comedian was her real father. Manhattan has a brief moment of humanity and is moved by how the Comedian and Sally could concieve someone like Laurie and realizes the value of human life. They return to Earth, only to find that half of New York was destroyed by Ozymandias alien creature. Then they teleport to Ozymandias’ Antarctic lair. Laurie attempts to shoot Ozymandias, but he suprises her with his new ability to cathc bullets. The heroes who confronted Ozymandias realized that his plan had worked and that even though millions of people were killed, a nuclear war has been averted. So they decided to keep the plot secret, except Rorschach of course, who was then secretly killed by Manhattan.

After these events Dan and Laurie visited Sally, who was now living in a retirment home. Laurie told her mother she knew about her father and the issue was put to rest. They left soon afterwards, indicating that they would continue to adventure, After watching them leave, Sally picked up an old photograph of the Minutemen, which included the Comedian, and kissed his half of the picture as tears rolled down her face.

Laurie Juspeczyk is played by Malin Akerman.

Doctor Manhattan/ John Osterman

Doctor Manhattan/ John Osterman

Jon Osterman aka Doctor Manhattan is the only man among the Watchmen who actually has superhuman powers. Jons Father was a watchmaker, and Jon planned on following in his footsteps. At the age of 16 Jon learns of how the atomic bomb was dropped on Hiroshima, his father loses his grip and stiff arms jon into becoming a nuclear physicist. This is basically the turning point of Jons life, its what foreshadowed his perception of time as predetermined and all things within it as so determined, including his own reactions and emotions. Jon attended Princeton University from 1948-1958 and graduated with a PHD in atomic physics. In 1959 he starts working at research base in Gila Flats, where they performed experiments on intrinsic fields. Here he meets a fellow researcher Janey Slater, who eventually falls in love with.

Jon an Janey go on a trip to an amusement park in 1959, where Janeys watchband snaps and a fat man steps on it. Jon tells her he can fix the watch and they end up sleeping together. After his 30th birthday, about a month later he goes to get Janey the watch, and realizes he left it in his lab coat pocket which is inside the intrinsic field chamber. He goes to the lab and into the chamber to retrieve it but the chamber door closes, and locks due to a saftey feature. He is unable to get out or override the countdown as his colleagues watched in horror as the timer reaches zero and he is ripped to dust. During the next few months many strange occurrences seem to be happening. Employees believe that the building is haunted, but it turns out that Jon is reforming himself. He appears a few times but never seems to be complete and he is also there for a few seconds, first he appears as just a nervous system, then as a circulatory system, followed by a muscled skeleton. He finally appears as a tall, hairless, naked, blue skinned man.

After Jons transformation he starts experiencing time unlike any other being. The story implies that he is experiencing every moment of his life at the exact same time. He has literally become the most powerful being in the universe, but he seems to have lost one of the aspects that make hium human. he has lost all sense of duty and responsibility, and only follows a course of action depending on who will benefit the most from it. For example, he does nothing to prevent the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, even though he is aware it is going to happen as he meets the President. He has obtained unlimited power but at the cost of his humanity, apathy and over all personality traits that make him human.

The Cold War was greatly influenced by Jon now taking the alias Doctor Manhattan, and seems to have tipped it in the Wests favor. He also aids the world economy by creating massive amounts of lithium in order to create electric cars. He also helps America win the Vietnam war in only 3 months. He is invited to become a member of the Crimebusters’ superhero group. Laurie Juspeczyk (Silk Spectre II) catches his attention, and in turn his relationship with Janey Slater ends and he begins dating Laurie.

Ozymandias’ plan to save the world causes the people to think that Manhattan gives cancer to people exposed to him over long periods of time. This turns out to be untrue, but results in Manhattan exiling himself to the planet Mars. He eventually brings Laurie there so she can convince him to save the human race. Laurie has a revelation, that the Comedian is her father and Doctor Manhattan is amazed by the unlikely chances that occurred to result in the birth of Laurie, which he sees as a stunning “thermodynamic miracle”. This helps Doctor Manhattan to decide that he should return to Earth to protect this wonder called “life”.

They teleport back to Earth but they return too late to stop Ozymanidas’ plan, so they teleport to Antarctica to face him. Ozymandias renders Doctor Manhattan useless with a tachyon generator that ends up interfering with Doctor Manhattan’s ability to see the future, and then disintegrates him. Doctor Manhattan regenerates himself, but when Ozymandias tells them that his plan has averted a nuclear war. Doctor Manhattan realizes that revealing the plan could restart the war tenfold. All of the heroes except for Rorschach agree to keep quiet. Rorschach leaves on his own and is killed by Doctor Manhattan to prevent him from ever telling the truth. Rorschach said the only way to keep him quiet is if Manhattan killed hi. So he did reluctantly.Doctor Manhattan decides to leave Earth again, but decided that he might return one day. Ozymandias is surprised with Doctor Manhattan’s apparent renewed interest in human life.

Doctor Manhattan is incredibly powerful and invulnerable to all harm. He can control atomic particles, change his body siz, change his color, unparalleld strength, does not age, no need for food, can reconstruct his body, teleport (himself and others), can see the future/past (unable to change it though), and telekinesis. His only weakness seems to be tachyons but he can quickly regenerate himself once they dissipate.

Doctor Manhattan is played by Billy Crudup.

The Comedian/ Edward Blake

The Comedian/ Edward Blake

The Comedian/ Edward Blake

Edward Blake aka The Comedian has been a costumed vigilante since he was very young and was know for his effective brutality. He managed to get rid of most of the organized crime in New York. He was the youngest member of the Minutemen (famous/successful group of heroes). After a photo shoot he attempted to rape a fellow Minuteman Sally Jupiter(Silk Spectre). She was saved by her boyfriend at the time (another Minuteman) Hooded Justice, who then beat Blake and broke his nose. He was then expelled from the Minutemen, and began to work on his own, with his restraint slowly starting to slip away. Eventually he and Sally had a sexual encounter where he impregnated her with their daughter, Laurie.

The Comedian fought in World War II and was named a war hero in the Pacific theater. In the late 1960’s he started working as a covert government operative. In 1966 he was invited to join the Crimebusters superhero group founded by Captain Metropolis, but he began to mock him and ruined the group before it even started. This is also when Blake met his daughter Laurie but was quickly stopped by Sally. He was still surprised that Sally held a grudge against him, he thought they and already settled their differences.

The Comedian with the help of Doctor Manhattan, Played a huge role in the Vietnam war. Manhattans powers forced the northern Vietnamese into surrender. Blake got a woman pregnant and was confronted by her, she demanded he take her with him when he left but he bluntly told her it wasn’t going to happen. She became enraged and slashed his face with a broken bottle. Blake pulled out a gun and shot and killed her (Doctor Manhattan had the chance to stop him but his lack of humanity caused him to stand and watch).

During the police rioting in the 1970’s caused the Keene Act, which required all costumed heroes to register with the government or retire. Mos ended up retiring and a few like Ozymandias publicly reveled their identities and capitalized on the fame. while some other like Rorschach continued their adventuring in defiance of the law.

Edward Blake killed Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein before they were able to reveal what they knew about the Watergate scandal. This all aided President Nixon to serve 5 terms as president. he also served as Nixon’s bodyguard, and saved the hostages during the Iranian hostage crisis. During a mission in 1985 Blake noticed activity on an uncharted island, and when he learned of the purpose he became traumatized. One night he drunkenly broke into Molochs apartment and began mumbling about the island. Ozymandias was the man controlling the islands activity and had bugged Molochs apartment for different reasons. He retaliated by personally murdering Blake by throwing him out of his apartment window. Blake was so horrified by what he knew he did not fight back at all.

Edward Blake was a very skilled hand-to-hand combatant in excellent physical condition, even at the time of his death at the age of 61. His simple, street-wise fighting style was very effective. The first time The Comedian and Ozymandias brawled, The comedian was victorious, which Ozymandias never seemed to get over. Blake was proficient with a .45 pistol and pump-action shotgun. He was skilled in military tactics. He is shown using many forms of weaponry skillfully, such as flamethrowers, explosives and grenade launchers. He was very talented in or received training in covert operations and unconventional warfare.

Edward Blake is played by Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Ozymandias / Adrian Veidt

Ozymandias / Adrian Veidt

Adrian Veidt aka Ozymandias is considered the smartest man in the world. He was born in 1939, the son of rich immigrant parents, Adrian Veidt was found to be incredibly intelligent. After his parents and his teachers became suspicious of his grades, he successfully hid his intelligence by deliberately achieving average grades. After his parents’ deaths, he inherited their substantial fortune at age 17, but chose to give it all to charity. Veidt then embarked on a vision quest, following the route of Alexander the Great – a childhood idol – throughout the Mediterranean, Asia Minor, and former ancient Persia.

It was during this journey that he consumed a ball of hashish and decided to become a superhero. Returning to America, he named himself “Ozymandias” and became a costumed vigilante, focusing particularly on organized crime and earning a reputation as “the smartest man on the planet.” However, his own cases robbed him of the idealistic belief that battling crime would truly lessen evil and suffering in the world. This was brought to a head when an abortive attempt to organize a new superhero team was disrupted by the Comedian, who noted in his brutally apt way exactly how petty the doings of the costumed heroes were in a world where the threat of nuclear war hung overhead, and how powerless they were to stop it. Veidt was inspired to do just that.

After the Keene Act was passed in 1977 Adrian decided to take a different route. He decided to reveal his identity to the world, which in turn benefited him greatly. Mostly allowing him to start a huge company and become a millionaire. He is the main villain in the Watchmen due to his plot to “save the world”. His plan was to stop a nuclear war by releasing a self made creature to attack New York City. He was forced to kill Edward Blake ( the Comedian) because he found out to much about his plan. And also convince the media into thinking that Jon Osterman( Doctor Manhattan) was giving people cancer. Rorschach also began to dig to deep into his plan and ended being framed for the murder of his old nemesis Moloch.

When he was confronted by Rorschach and Nit Owl II in his Anactic lair, he ended up easily besting them in combat. When joined by Doctor Manhattan and the Silk Spectre the battle continued. Manhattan was quickly beaten by tachyons, Veidt had set up. Manhattan but quickly materialize and bested Veidt. It was to late though, his plan had already been put in effect, and even thought the world was saved from nuclear war, millions of people were murdered in the process. But the heroes all reluctantly agreed to keep it all under wraps in order to keep the peace, except for Rorschach who was killed by Manhattan.

Adrian Veidt is played by Matthew Goode.

Young Sally Jupiter/ Silk Spectre I

Sally Jupiter (Silk Spectre I)

Sally Jupiter aka Silk Spectre I is the mother of Laurie Jusespeczyk. She started fighting crime around 1938 when she was about 18 years old. She was known as a sex symbol who villains and criminals didn’t really mind getting caught by. She was invited by Captain Metropolis to join the Minutemen. in 1940, after a meeting with the Minutemen she was sexually assaulted by The Comedian, who was about three years younger than her and was apparently prone to flirting with her before the incident. He was stopped by fellow Minuteman Hooded Justice, who gave him a vicious beating, but the event would have a profound impact on Sally’s life; her agent, Laurence Schexnayder, persuaded her not to press charges against the Comedian for fear of damaging the group’s image. More celebrity than vigilante, Silk Spectre provided a cover for Hooded Justice’s homosexuality by being his glamorous girlfriend (possibly her way of thanking him for intervening when the Comedian attacked her). In an interview, she admitted that she didn’t really like the Silhouette, who was constantly pestering her about her Polish heritage, but later expressed regret that she was expelled from the group simply because she was a lesbian, especially since there were men on the team who were gay (though she did not identify them).

In 1947 Sally retired from crimefighting and married her agent, Laurence Schexnayder, while keeping in touch with Hollis Mason (Nite Owl) and Captain Metropolis. In 1949 she gave birth to her daughter Laurie. It was known to both parents that Laurie was not Laurence’s child, but the Comedian’s, from a second encounter, and this led to conflict in the family, leading the couple to divorce in 1956. While not explicitly stated, it is implied that Sally’s second sexual encounter with the Comedian was consensual, and that, despite it all, she did have feelings for him.

Sally Jupiter is played by Carla Gugino.

In Under the Hood, Hollis Mason’s tell-all book, Mason described Dollar Bill as an honest, friendly young man, and rued the stupidity of capes because of the incident. Interestingly enough, Dollar Bill’s clear commercial motivations (public identity, hired by a bank) are never commented on by his peers or the subsequent generation of vigilantes who all seem to regard him as a worthy hero – even Rorschach, who condemns Ozymandias for his commercialization, laments Dollar Bill’s untimely death. Dollar Bill is played by Dan Payne.

Edward Jacobi aka Moloch the Mystic is a super villain who ran an underground vice den and constructed a solar mirror weapon as part of his nefarious schemes. Over the course of his criminal career, he clashed with Nite Owls, Ozymandias, and Doctor Manhattan. Eventually captured, he spent the 1970s in prison, where he converted to Christianity and gave up his life of crime. At some point during that time, he worked for Dimensional Developments, where he contracted cancer. Following his release, he lived alone in New York City, until his murder in 1985 as part of Ozymandias’ plot when Jacobi was shot in the forehead. Rorschach found Jacobi dead with the bullet still in his forehead and was framed for Jacobi’s murder.
Moloch was played by Matt Frewer.

Big Figure

Big Figure was a dwarvish gangster with a penchant for cigars who was incarcerated in Sing Sing prison. Though very little of his past is revealed, it is mentioned that he’d been imprisoned mainly due to the actions of Rorschach and the Nite Owl.

Walter Kovacs was immediately threatened upon his arrival in prison by Big Figure and his small army of henchmen. Even in prison, Figure still commanded his organization on the outside; his first meeting with Kovacs is highlighted by threatening the family of prison guard Mulhearney, who stands watch on Kovacs’ isolated cell.

Big Figure later arranges for a prison riot with the simple intent of distracting the prison’s guards to gain entry to Kovacs’ cell, wanting revenge. Unfortunately, Kovacs proves much craftier than his attackers; he binds the hands of the bigger man, Lawrence, to the cell’s door when the man lunges for him. Figure orders his second goon to kill Lawrence; Lawrence’s body had been blocking the door’s lock housing. When the second man, Michael, finally opens the door with an acetyline torch, Kovacs shatters his toilet bowl causing a small flood of water to make contact with the torch’s frayed power cord, electrocuting Michael. Big Figure retreats, with Kovacs right behind. Kovacs finds his adversary hiding in a men’s room and drowns him in a toilet just before Nite Owl and Silk Spectre show up.

Big figure is played by Danny Woodburn.

Malcolm Long

Dr. Malcolm Long

the psychiatrist who is assigned to evaluate Rorschach after he is apprehended. He is initially very hopeful of “curing” Rorschach, even though his utter lack of emotion makes Long’s psychiatric evaluation techniques useless. When Rorschach reveals the exact details of his past to him, Long is profoundly affected.

It is rumored that Long will not be in the upcoming film.

In the description of Big Figure, it’s stated that “When the second man, Michael, finally opens the door with an acetyline torch, Kovacs shatters his toilet bowl causing a small flood of water to make contact with the torch’s frayed power cord, electrocuting Michael.” An acetylene torch uses gases, not electricity. In the movie, Michael is using an electric saw, and is electrocuted in the manner above.
